MST Hub – Monitors act independently?

Hey there,

My computer at work is being replaced by an all-in-one machine with DisplayPort but I have to keep my old 3 monitor set up. I would like to keep the 3 monitors I am currently using and have the all-in-one machine to the side and run it as a 4th monitor.

Will the Multi Stream Transport (MST) Hub DisplayPort 1-3 allow for the monitors I connect to detect as separate monitors or will it just detect as one large monitor spanning all 3? I will be adapting the output from the Hub to DVI as the monitors only have that and VGA. Really need them to be work as individual monitors if possible and this seems like the only solution given the machine I have to work with – without replacing all the monitors with ones I can daisy chain together.

Thanks

Hi Hal,
Can you please tell me what is the make and model of the all in one machine you have? I want to find out what GPU you have in the PC.
MST (Multi Stream Transport) can drive each display independent and SST (Single Stream Transport) runs spanning as you describe.
In Radeon based GPUs you can run in MST and you can form a SLS panel across 3 or more displays, AMD named this feature as Eyefinity as an example.
Please get back to me on the question above and I will see if your GPU is supported.

Hey Paul

Thanks for getting back. The all in one is a Dell Optiplex 9030 and it appears it has an Intel HD 4600 and a AMD Radeon R7 M265 Series in there for graphics.

For the Radeon card you should not have any problems with the mst hub. Please note that the mst hub is a dp++ device so you can buy passive adapters to power your displays.

Thanks Paul – I believe I already have some of the adapters from other machines around the office though I think some are active – is there an issue using active rather than passive if I have a mix of them available?

You can use active adapters. The only advantage by using active adapters on the MST Hub is when you want to go above 1920x1200p in resolution. Passive adapters can only power up to 1200p.
You can use a mix of active and passive adapters without issues.

Hey there

Back again with another question – my admin who was looking in to picking this up has asked if the CSV-5300A will work with the current set up as that is available from the vendor who we already have in our procurement system – unlike the CSV-5300.

I don’t know enough about DisplayPort versions to answer the question so I thought it safer to ask here 🙂

Hi Hal,
Based on your configuration ” The all in one is a Dell Optiplex 9030 and it appears it has an Intel HD 4600 and a AMD Radeon R7 M265 Series in there for graphics” the CSV-5300A will work fine with the R7 265 discreet graphics card. The DP version on the R7 265 is DP 1.2 and the MST Hub is DP 1.2a, a new version but is compatible to standard 1.2

Hey there,

I finally managed to get my old computer backed up and moved over to the all-in-one this morning and I have plugged in the MST hub and now it seems I have my old three monitors back but the monitor on the all-in-one refuses to display. I can get it to work if I turn off one of the other three it seems but that is not going to work.

I am guessing that there is some setup that I have neglected to do here that hopefully will be obvious and simple to fix. Also the monitors seems to running off the Intel internal card rather than the dedicated and I am not sure why that may be…

Hoping you can help to get all four monitors working together.

Cheers

Hi Hal,
From my understanding the Intel Graphics chip can support up to 3 displays.
Can you check if your system BIOS can deactivate the integrated graphics (intel) and use the (AMD M265)?

I see both cards listed in the bios but there is nothing I can do to interact with them.

The hub is powering my 3 external monitors fine but it is the screen on the all-in-one that is not working.

When I try to Extend Desktop To This Display it just resets itself back to Disconnect This Display.

The reason for this is because you can support up to three displays only, that is based on the number of pipeline your graphics can support. My opinion is due to the Intel graphics, the amd 265 should support more than 3. There must be a way to select that gpu
