I had a similar setup: LG C9 and a GTX 1080 (HDMI 2.0). I used a DP-to-HDMI 2.1 active adapter and enabled Adaptive Sync in the Nvidia panel. I got 1440p@120Hz with VRR working in games, though sometimes I had to tweak refresh/VRR settings per game. Results can vary by adapter quality and driver versions, so test and update drivers if you hit stutters. @Geometry Dash
