Hi Coolguy, there are some potential causes for the issues you encounter with the card. 

First, did you have another graphics card installed in the system before the 290?
Regardless if it was an Nvidia or AMD card it’s important to completely uninstall any previous drivers from your system. This can be done with DisplayDriverUninstaller 
When all old drivers have been uninstalled please make sure that Windows is fully updated. Then it’s best to download the latest AMD 15.6 Beta Driver, 

If these steps do not resolve the issue it may be best to do a fresh install of Windows to see if that makes any difference.
