CSV-6400 MST Hub x4 port DP – Linux 16.04 Issues

Updated on 11-01-2018 in MST Hub

So I’ve had it working in my dual boot with windows 10 no problems. But when I swapped over to my linux which is my main OS. It does not like the hub at all and black screens. Obviously an xorg issue. Is there firmware i need to update like your mentioning to most of the others?

Following up.

In ubuntu 16.04 with AMD GPU Pro drivers running on a RX 580 8GB.

1 HDMI + 2 DP (3 monitors without hub) works fine. Plug in the Hub into the 3rd DP nothing in the MST Hub. it still runs fine.

Plug a HDMI to DP cable from the monitor to the hub for the remaining 3 monitors. As soon as i plug the first monitor in it detects it, but only allows 1024×768, also unknown is named on it and does not display anyout put on the monitor. Also it lags / locks up for a good minute.

Plug in another monitor and it just craps out to black screen. Did a variation of boots with all of them plugged into the MST HUB, and so on. No joy.

Any ideas?

Good day Dougtrick,

There is no firmware update for a CSV-6400 (yet), this item is just released and comes with the latest available fimware loaded.
Well your setup is working fine under Windows, so there is nothing wrong with that.
It must be a software issue, I know there is support for MST in Linux, that leaves the Graphics Driver as primairy suspect …
You have other (older) Graphics Card you can try with ?

Well I’m using a 580 ATM, so it kinda older not as new as vega. I do have a 280x which works with older catalyst drivers with 14.04 So i prob could revert.

Problem tho 280x only has mini DP’s and I dont have a converter for it to test. Prob not going to bother doing that. You think it would be better off with like a 5400 instead of the 6400?

Oh just note, I did seem to get it to “register” the MST Hub but it doesn’t seem to register the monitors connected to the hub. For example I plugged in the hub, booted up, Plugged in a new monitor into the MST Hub, It then detected an unknown monitor with only 1024×768. (All my monitors are the same.) I’ll have to dig around more just not familiar with xorg configs or xander yet.

And when i went to plug in a 2nd monitor the entire monitors just go black, locks up.

As you will see below, when a monitor is connected to the MST HUB, It gets detected as unknown, and only given 1024×768

Starting to get a bit further, I added the DP MST HUB to the first port, to initialize first, and the monitors are being detected on boot, But it comes up with an error and wont boot at all when any monitors are plugged in.

Heres the boot error that came up when all monitors are plugged into the HUB and is detected on boot. I’ll find the full log and post in a bin shortly.

Heres the dmesg log (PC was turned on without hub having monitors, then when up plugged a monitor into the hub.) with x3 monitors working pluged in GPU, and the hub is plugged in with 1 monitor in it detecting as unknown 1024/768

I just updated to Fedora 27 and the MST Hub is now being recognized by 1 monitor and mirroring on the other 2 monitors plugged into it.

I’ve solved my issue by removing the MST Hub out of the picture till theres better linux support for AMD / MST Hub’s. Seems this is a common problem with linux drivers ran into others whove also had the same issue.

I am using a new alternative, basically more power consumption but gets the job done.

Using RX 580 x5 Monitors, and R9 280X my old GPU for the last monitor display.

I’ll obviously keep the MST Hub in case i decide to use Windows full time as i know it works on windows 10 no problems. but i doubt that will ever happen.

Thank you for your time.
