Lost 5.1 when using DP to HDMI Adapter

I have used the HDMI output on my 980ti which carried 5.1 surround audio and of course video. I needed to free up my HDMI output for the VR headsets coming out, so got the DP to HDMI cable to carry the audio and video signal. I get sound, but only two channels (left and right). Why did I lose surround sound and how can I get it back? I know DP can output 5.1 so not sure why this is happening…

Hi TheTonik, thank you for joining our forum. Unfortunately we’re no Nvidia expers anymore and don’t have a way to replicate your setup. Can you share the rest of your configuration and did you have a look at this DP audio document?

I did. I’m beginning to believe I will only get two channel audio with this setup. I have the following 980ti:

That outputs to your DP-to-HDMI adapter, which then plugs into my receiver.

Hi,pls tell me some information about the VR headsets, can it support the 5.1 sound, does it have any set for the audio?

Neither the Rift nor the Vive support 5.1. The Rift has built-in stereo headphones, while the Vive has a headphone output on the headset.
