I have tried your suggestion and that will sometimes work as well, but it is similar to the process to what I am already doing with disconnecting, rebooting and then reconnecting the Surface each time I want to use the MST Hub. 
I guess I am hoping for a solution where I can disconnect my Surface from the docking station and the MST Hub and then reconnect it without having to reboot.
