Hi Francec, The only way to connect a 4K display to your Macbook Pro 17″ 2009 is via the USB port. Note that due to the limitation of the USB 2.0 data transfer speed you might experience slowdown on motion picture but you can run normal applications on it. The display resolution you will get is 3840×2160 30Hz on the USB 3.0 HDMI™ 4K adapter or the USB 3.0 4K DisplayPort adapter Even the supported Macs from 2013 or later  can run up to 3840×2160 30Hz natively as well. Here is picture testing our USB 3.0 4K DisplayPort adapter on a Macbook Pro 2008 using the USB 2.0 port The display is a Samsung UD970 prototype and running 3840×2160 30Hz
IMPORTANT NOTE
Your monitor will not support DisplayPort 3840×2160 30Hz, only runs at 60Hz
In this case you must your the HDMI adapter
