CSV-5300A doesn’t like adapters

Just picked up a CSV-5300A to work with my Sapphire RX480 8GB video card.

I confirmed it works without issues with DisplayPort monitors (tested 2 including a 30″ 1600p).

When I plug in adapters to convert from DVI to DisplayPort I get black screens, snow, or shifted image even after resetting.  I confirmed my adapters are passive.

This is occurring using different monitors, different DVI cables, different adapters, I even tested it on a different video card (onboard Intel HD4600).  The adapters were tested plugging directly into the video card, the adapters and monitors work fine when bypassing the CSV-5300A.

I even tested a dual-link DVI-to-DP adapter (powered by USB), it doesn’t work (hooked it up to the 30″ monitor just to be sure it exceeded the passive bandwidth).

The firmware of the CSV-5300A is .45

Did I read the literature wrong?  I was under the impression the CSV-5300A supported adapters – doesn’t seem to be the case for me.

Dear rtangwai,

based on our experience it is not a question if our CSV-5300A or other MST-Hubs do “like” adapters or cables. The MST-Hubs are DP++ products which means they are active. From the outputs of the MST-Hub you should use passive adapters or cables to make sure to get the signals like you want them. Can you check this out first? As I stated in my original message I already confirmed the adapters are passive and work when *NOT* plugged into the CSV-5300A.

Sorry rtangwai, the message with the passive adapters was mistakenly overread. For the adapters you most probably mean from DP to DVI, not from DVI to DP. Can you check further on the cables used? Either borrow different ones from a friend to see if that brings a different result or otherwise mention here which cables you are exactly using (Brand, lenght etc.).

I have tested multiple adapters from Lenovo and Startech, and assorted DVI cables both single-link and dual-link, 6ft. and 10ft., and tested Benq and Samsung monitors, all work when NOT plugged into the CSV-5300A but do not show a usable signal when plugged into the CSV-5300A. The MST hub is working with DP cables just fine I have a 1600p and a 1080p DisplayPort monitor plugged in right now.

Is there a newer firmware available?

Let´s try it this way. When you transfer/change a signal there are 2 important things. 1) You should change the signal as close as possible to the source and 2) with the shortest adapter. If you use a longer cable/adapter it can cause that the signal is not stable. That is what we have here. In our opinion a Firmware update does not solve it. As an adapter the CAC-1000 could be helpful and eventually shorter cables.

Cables are 2m long, adapters are quite short too. I have asked my vendor to lend me a Startech MST hub for comparison purposes as this is delaying our call-centres upgrades, to see if it is fundamentally an adapter issue or just this particular MST hub.

normally 2 or 3 meter long cables should not be an issue indeed.
what we do often hear is that DP to DVi cable/adapters give issues, even when they are passive. Not 100% sure why but most probably disrupt of the MST signal. In such cases using a CAC-1000 (DP-to-DVI passive Adapter) + normal DVI Cable does the “trick”. ALthough i do not think a firmware update will help with your issue you are of course welcome to the latest version. I will ask [email protected] to send that to you by email.

We have CSV-5300H, with DP to 3 HDMI, when connected with HDMI cable, monitor shows normally,  but when cable is HDMI to DVI ( monitor have only DVI input) then we also have black screen, but monitor is detected.  Need solution to solve this.

Please make sure to use  a passive HDMI to DVI adapter. Somthing like our CAA-HMD>DFD : http://www.club-3d.com/en/detail/2355/hdmi_to_dvi_d_single_link_passive_adapter/

Plus of course a normal DVI cable to go to the screen. That should work.
