Can I connect DP1.1 monitors to a CSV-5200 MST

I’ve just purchased a CSV-5200, and have instantly struck a problem.  I have 2 AOC 1920×1080 monitors, and I bought the CSV-5200 because the AOC product page says that the monitors support DP1.2a.  When I connect everything together with DP cables, my laptop correctly identifies that I’ve connected the two monitors (it recognises the model name, resolution, etc.), and it seems to be sending a correct signal, but my monitors only show a black image.  The monitors show that they are receiving a signal (green activity light indicates it’s trying to display something) but the image is black and I can’t access any on-screen menus.

 

With a little further investigation I’ve found that despite the monitor production features page saying it supports DP1.2, the specifications page says DP1.1.

 

Should it be possible to connect DP1.1 monitors to the CSV-5200 using MST and DP cables?  I’m wanting to extend the display, not mirror it.

 

I should add that I’ve tried using DP->HDMI adapters to connect the monitors and then everything works perfectly.  But this is not a good solution for me, as I need the HDMI ports on the monitors free to connect a different device.  I really want to use the MST Hub with DP connections on the monitors.

Hello Peter,

unfortunately  DP1.1 doesn’t support MST. MST got introduced as of DP1.2. the limitation is in the Display hardware there is no solution to upgrade that.

Over the weekend I’d done some extra research and found this DisplayPort FAQ:

It clearly says that “A DisplayPort v1.1a display can be the last display in a DP v1.2 chain.”  So should I expect my 1.1 monitors to work on an MST hub, as both of them are technically the “last” in the chain (I’m not chaining another display off the back of them)?

If not, is my only option going to be to use HDMI adapters?

Hi peter,

if the last screen in the chain is a dp1.1 the chances are it will just mirror your desktop. it will keep being a hardware limitation.

you might want to use the following items as a solution for the lack of output ports on HDMI.

Thanks Clubbie.  Since starting this thread, I’ve had various people confirm that DisplayPort 1.1 monitors should work with no concern on an MST Hub, including Club-3D support, Lindy (I emailed about the capabilities of their hub), and the DisplayPort organisation themselves (who, it turns out, have a VERY helpful email FAQ team).  So, theoretically I should have no issues with my setup.  I’ve also had the firmware on the CSV-5200 updated, tried it with various different cables, and tried it on a different Windows PC, but with the same results.

Current scenario is that Club-3D think it’s a possibly a hardware fault in my hub, which we’re working to sort out.  🙂
